Kathy Griffin, a native of near-west Chicago suburbs, is the youngest of five children. She has three older brothers and an older sister. When her parents retired to California, Kathy moved west with them after graduating from Oak Park River Forest High School and began trying to break into show busines
Kathleen Mary "Kathy" Griffin (born November 4, 1960) is an American actress and comedian. Born in Oak Park, Illinois, she moved to Los Angeles in 1978, where she studied drama at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute and became a member of improvisational comedy troupe The Groundlings. In the 1990s, Griffin began performing as a stand-up and also appeared as a guest star on several television shows. She achieved recognition in a supporting role on the NBC sitcom Suddenly Susan (1996–2000).
Her breakthrough came on the Bravo reality show Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List (2005–2010), which became a ratings hit for the network and earned her two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Reality Program. Griffin has released five comedy albums, with all of them receiving Grammy Award nominations. Her first album, For Your Consideration (2008), made her the first female comedian to debut at the top of the Billboard Top Comedy Albums chart. In 2009, she released her autobiography Official Book Club Selection: A Memoir According to Kathy Griffin, which topped The New York Times Best Seller list. Griffin has also taped stand-up specials with HBO and Bravo.
Griffin is an LGBT rights activist involved in causes such as same-sex marriage and the repeal of "Don't ask, don't tell". She has also participated in two USO tours. Influenced by acts such as Joan Rivers and Don Rickles, Griffin is known for her conversational style and controversial statements on pop culture, religion and sexuality. She is recognized as one of the top female comedians in the United States. In 2011, she became the first comedian to have four television specials in a year.
Lost In Showbiz must admit that it had never heard of the Parents Television Council, but it was intrigued – mostly by the use of the word "even" in the Mail's report. This suggested that it must be an organisation renowned for its restraint, which would start "fuming" only when faced with the most unbearable provocation. It definitely is not to be confused with, say, The Arnica Network, which recently orchestrated a campaign against the BBC, claiming it had "missed another child protection issue". This sounds very serious in the wake of the Savile child-abuse scandal, but turned out to refer to an episode of the CBeebies programme Get Well Soon in which a singing doctor called Dr Ranj had given a puppet called Deep an inoculation. "Will Dr Ranj, who is a paediatrician from Kent, be struck off?" thundered The Arnica Network's founder, who variously claimed that the programme violated the medical ethics of informed consent and may have encouraged children to "play with needles".
When Tiffany Rinehart moved to Los Angeles to work as comedian Kathy Griffin‘s assistant, the job came with more than she had bargained for. Griffin was shooting her hit Bravo reality show “My Life on the D List,” and Rinehart was soon making regular appearances.
The fun of suddenly being on TV was overshadowed by another concern, Rinehart said.
“I started watching it, and I’m like, Wow I’m fat! And I need to do something about it.”
Watch this and other weight-loss stories on “20/20: Half Their Size” Friday at 10 p.m. ET
Rinehart decided not just to slim down but to get healthy, and began the slow process of losing weight through diet and exercise. She has lost more than 80 pounds.
